Ysgol Beca: Curriculum Overview
As a school, we are planning a new curriculum as part of our ongoing process of raising standards.
Context of the School
Ysgol Beca is located in the rural village of Efailwen, on the border between Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. The school is named after the Rebecca Riots, which were a significant part of the local area’s history. Ysgol Beca was opened in 1972 on a large site after the closure of local schools. Approximately 45 pupils now attend the school, beginning their education in the Nursery class. The school is a community school with children coming from the surrounding communities around Efailwen.
The school has two main classrooms, a resource room, and a hall. There are playground areas and a field on the school grounds, including an outdoor learning room and a garden. Additionally, the village’s resources are used to enrich the pupils’ learning and offer valuable experiences beyond the school site.
Welsh is the school’s official language. In the Nursery, Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 classes, Welsh is the only medium of instruction. In the junior classes (Years 3-6), both Welsh and English are used as the mediums of learning, with the aim of enabling the pupils to become fully bilingual by the time they transfer to secondary school.
Our aim is to lead, encourage, and nurture skills by providing experiences in a happy and caring environment where all learners can be supported, motivated, and challenged to reach their full potential.
Location of the School
Ysgol Beca is situated in a picturesque location in the village of Efailwen, close to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the Preseli Hills, which offer a number of advantages for enriching pupils’ learning experiences.
The natural surroundings provide a rich and varied environment for outdoor learning. The school grounds, which include wild areas and gardens, the local area, the coastline, and the surrounding parks, offer many opportunities for nature-based and environmental learning and well-being activities. Pupils can explore local habitats, learn about different ecosystems, and engage in field studies to develop their understanding of their local area. They can also participate in physical activities such as cycling, orienteering, and outdoor sports, promoting physical well-being and appreciation for nature.
Additionally, the location of Ysgol Beca showcases aspects of Wales’ history and culture. A rich history is on the doorstep. The attack on the tollgate at Efailwen, Carmarthenshire, was the first in a series of protests by ordinary people against high and unfair taxes over a period of four years.
Furthermore, pupils can visit nearby historic landmarks, such as castles, ruins, and archaeological sites, to learn about Wales’ rich heritage and its people. They can also engage with the local community and learn from the wisdom of local residents who can share stories, legends, and traditional customs, fostering a sense of cultural identity and pride among the pupils.
The local area also offers opportunities for practical learning experiences related to farming and agriculture, sustainability, food growing, environmental care, and entrepreneurship and business.
In addition, the school’s location provides opportunities for community engagement and social learning. Pupils can participate in local community projects, volunteer initiatives, and social events, promoting civic responsibility and social awareness. They can also interact with the diverse communities in the area, learning about different cultures, languages, and traditions, and developing interpersonal skills, empathy, and respect for diversity.
In general, the location of Ysgol Beca offers a unique and rich learning environment that integrates nature, history, culture, and community engagement. It enables pupils to connect with their surroundings, nurture a love of their heritage, and develop a holistic understanding of the world around them, enriching their overall educational experience.

To ensure that every pupil takes part in a range of physical and creative activities to develop individual talents and skills.
Our Curriculum Vision
At Ysgol Beca, our curriculum is designed to ignite the enthusiasm of every pupil, giving them the necessary foundation to excel in an ever-changing world. We strive to nurture a lifelong love of learning that will support them throughout their lives.
The well-being of our pupils is at the heart of our educational approach. Our curriculum vision is based on Welsh values and traditions, prioritizing literacy, numeracy, and digital skills as essential life skills. We believe these are fundamental for every child’s future educational success.
Practical and outdoor learning experiences are a key part of our curriculum, enabling pupils to participate in activities that are relevant to their interests and needs. We adapt our teaching methods to provide opportunities for children to develop skills and explore new concepts, building their knowledge and understanding through purposeful themes that stimulate their imagination and creativity.
We aim to foster confidence in our pupils, enabling them to make thoughtful decisions. Our mission is to provide the knowledge, skills, and virtues that every pupil needs to face the challenges of the future and continue learning throughout their lives.
Our Inclusive Curriculum
Our curriculum will raise the aspirations of every learner. As a school, we have considered how each learner will be supported to achieve the four purposes and to progress. We have considered our provision for additional learning needs (ALN) and how we will meet the needs of different groups of learners.
The Four Purposes
The four purposes are the starting point and aspiration of our school curriculum plan. The aim of our school is to support our learners to become:
- Ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
- Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
- Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
- Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society
We have characters developed by our pupils to help promote the Four Purposes.
Statements of What’s Important
Our curriculum will provide opportunities and experiences to develop the key concepts, knowledge, and skills as described in the Statements of What’s Important and in line with the Curriculum for Wales.
Areas of Learning and Experience
Our curriculum will provide learning experiences across the 6 Areas of Learning and Experience:
- Languages, Literacy, and Communication
- Expressive Arts
- Science and Technology
- Humanities
- Mathematics and Numeracy
- Health and Well-being
Learning, Progression, and Assessment
Our curriculum will support learning by designing learning opportunities that draw on educational principles. Our curriculum, supported by effective teaching and learning, enables learners to make meaningful progress. Over time, our learners will develop and improve their skills and knowledge. Our curriculum focuses on understanding what it means to make progress in a particular Area or discipline and how learners should deepen and broaden their knowledge and understanding, skills and abilities, attributes, and dispositions, and is guided by the Progression Code. This, in turn, supports our approach to assessment, and its purpose is to guide planning for future learning. Assessment will be embedded as an intrinsic part of learning and teaching. Every learner will be assessed on entry to the school.
Language Medium
Ysgol Beca provides Welsh-medium education and uses Welsh to deliver the curriculum. English lessons are introduced in Year 3.
Cross-curricular Skills
Our curriculum will develop the essential cross-curricular skills of literacy, numeracy, and digital competence. Our curriculum will enable learners to develop competence and ability in these skills and extend and apply them across all Areas. Learners will have opportunities across the curriculum to:
- Develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills
- Use numbers and solve problems in real-life situations
- Be confident users of a range of technologies to help them act and communicate effectively and make sense of the world.
CCF – Children’s Rights
Our school will promote knowledge and understanding of Part 1 of the UNCRC, and the UNCRC, among those delivering teaching and learning.
CWRE: Careers and Work-related Experiences
Our curriculum will incorporate careers and work-related experiences for all our learners.
RSE: Relationships and Sex Education
Our school curriculum embraces the guidance in the RSE Code. Our Relationships and Sex Education provision will play a positive and empowering role in our learners’ education and will play a key role in supporting them to achieve the four purposes as part of a whole-school approach. The foundation of RSE is to help learners form and maintain a range of relationships, all based on mutual trust and respect. These relationships are crucial for the development of emotional well-being, resilience, and empathy.
Religion, Values, and Ethics (RVE)
Religion, Values, and Ethics (RVE) is a statutory requirement within the Curriculum for Wales and is mandatory for all learners aged 3 to 16. RVE within the Humanities Area will provide rich contexts that engage learners in exploring questions of faith, belief, spirituality, morality, and ethics. Through RVE, our curriculum will encourage respect for diverse beliefs and traditions, fostering open-mindedness and empathy among learners as they gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives.
Our approach to RVE is embedded in the broader aim of developing ethical and informed citizens who are thoughtful and responsible in their interactions within the school, local community, and wider world. This aligns with our vision of cultivating pupils who are considerate, confident individuals ready to contribute positively to society.
Review and Refinement
Our school curriculum will be continuously reviewed to respond to the outcomes of professional inquiry, the evolving needs of learners, and social contexts and needs. The reviews will consider stakeholder opinions and will be approved by the Governing Body. We will publish a summary of our curriculum and review this summary if any changes are made to the curriculum during the review process.
